My Voice Experience
I recorded the audio version of my book TO SURVIVE CAREGIVING even though my publisher doesn't usually let the author read the book. Recording Engineer,Dave Giorgio from SpokenBooks, Inc, West Conshohocken, PA, talked to me on the phone and he agreed immediately. We knocked it out in 12 hours and Dave offered me a job reading other author's books!
My reputation is as the doctor who makes you laugh speaking English (not Doctorspeak).Martin Sabel, from the Internet Radio show, Mr. Eldercare, has invited me back several times saying " you have a way of saying things so people really understand."
BUT I can speak in iambic pentameter when I need to; I taught geriatrics and Internal Medicine at the University of Chicago and Northwestern University Medical school for 10 years, during which I also presented clinical data and information at national medical conferences.
I have 27 years of professional public speaking to varied audiences from 3rd graders to physicians. I am frequently asked to present motivational and educational programs for other professionals in- and out of health care, including teachers, entrepreneurs, church leaders, realtors, financial planners, human resource directors, lawyers and the general public.
In my non-physician life, I write contemporary romance fiction with heroines who dance around the "1/2 a hundred years" age mark. My multi-ethnic characters come from every age group and socio-economic stratae. My readings have drawn both laughter and tears.
My website, , has several videoclips of my presentations and press links to the radio interviews I have given.
My Training
I grew up in a family where being articulate was cool and being witty was necessary.
BA in Biology from Wesleyan University, CT with a minor in English Literature ( our calculus exams had essay questions!)
MD from U of Pittsburgh School of Medicine ( where I was President of the Student National Medical Association and very involved in negotiating with the university to recruit and retain minority students. I was the only student on the medical school faculty search committee and I worked with the National Association of Minority Medical Educators to recruit minority medical school faculty from around the country.
Internship and Residency- Temple U. Phila., PA
Fellowship in Geriatrics - UCLA
Fellowship in Medical Education Research- Association of American Medical Colleges, Washington,DC
Course Work in the American College of Physician Executives.
No matter where I trained, I always gave presentations in my profession and in the community at schools and churches. I was sure to give everybody a chuckle, even if I was spanking them for neglecting their health.
My Studio Equipment
I work with Momentum Media Inc. and Keep It Safe Productions, both of which have full studio capabilities.
Additional Skills
I have been on the faculty of U of Chicago, Northwestern, Chicago Osteopathic, Rush University medical schools and U of IL Geriatrics Nurse Practitioner Program, teaching communication and clinical decision-making, how to partner with physicians, how to deliver bad news and clinical medical ethics.
Developing a geriatrics program for a community health system was a real piece of vocal talent. I created the job and talked the administration of Ingalls Health System (Harvey, IL) into hiring me when I needed to work closer to home for my kids.
Ingalls CFO introduced me to an audience by saying, "fasten your seatbelts; this lady is gonna blow you away." Afterwards, he said that was the first time everyone stayed to the end of a presentation and stayed awake. I get that a lot.
I have experience in TV, radio and Internet interviews. I am a regular columnist in GraceToday Magazine and I have contributed articles to Radius Magazine and several local Chicago publications. The NEW YORK TIMES posted a 2-part article on me on their website, Oct 15, 2008 under Jane Gross' byline. Jane described me as a "frank and funny woman."
My pastor, Mike Russell from the Jubilee Faith Community in Country Club Hills, IL said I know how to chide without offending people. Others have said I can cuss people out so sweet, they don't realize it for three days.
I sing Jazz ( and I got to sing on the audioversion of TO SURVIVE CAREGIVING); I enjoyed doing theatre in college including courses on Vocal Music for the Theatre. I have also been in choirs since age 6.
