My Voice Experience
Okay, so i was born in a small town in England called Leicester (pronounced 'lester'), to Jamaican parents. They went there to study, met, fell in love and i was their fourth production. What a work of art!! To know me, you've got to hear about my parents first. Mummy studied nursing in england and my father, civil engineering. They were so well loved in england that our family made the news when they decided to move back to jamaica. In jamaica, mummy opened a nursery, a nursing school, a nursing home and a preparatory school - imagine the strength of that woman!! Daddy opened his own construction firm and was always creating something new. He had a dry sense of humor - british humor if you will. He loved to laugh at his own jokes, but that's because, well, we never really got it. Such a happy man, that man - always whistling or HO! HO! HOing. Mummy had a sense of humor that everyone could understand - a no nonsense, grab your chest or belly and laugh 'til it hurts, kind of humor - and she always had everyone's attention. Not because she had a commanding presence (she was a slight, small woman with a soft voice), but because she was at times (forgive me mummy) well, tactless or should i have said straightforward. Either way those two individuals were just wonderful human beings who passed on their wit and sense of humor to me. I remember disrupting quite a class room with jokes and different characters while growing up. Anywhere from imitating any of our teachers or headmistress to imitating Bob Marley or Peter Tosh on stage - and i loved it. My teachers loved it too, in fact i remember our snotty headmistress being reduced to tears after laughing so hard. Then there was my drama coach - Mr. Bobby Ghisays. We butted heads at each session and i'll never forget when he called me 'insolent'. I took great offense to that. He added no drama to it when he told me - he just sat there looking over the rim of his glasses and said it. At first i thought he gave me a character to play - so i stepped back and began to give him 'insolent'. Little did i know he was joking. I loved that man dearly too. ....and so there it is - a little bit of me. Now though i won't disrupt our office meetings, but i do heckle a bit. FIND LAUGHTER IN EVERYTHING YOU DO.
