My Voice Experience
A decade before Capital Public Radio's KXPR first signed on the air, Carver Barney was hosting a mainstream jazz show on its student-run predecessor, KERS at California State University, Sacramento. That was in 1969. Three years later, Carver joined the professional air staff at Urban Contemporary station, KPOP-FM in Roseville. He picked up additional experience at "easy listening" KCTC-FM. Then, in 1982, Carver returned to KPOP and took over as music director. He also did radio commercials and voice-overs
Carver joined the jazz staff at KXJZ in 1993, and by the end of the decade, his warm, engaging presence on the air had earned Carver "Best Late Night Announcer" honors from the Sacramento News & Review. He has also been profiled in Sacramento Magazine.
Along with his on-air talents, Carver is a skilled desktop publisher. His own, music-related publications have reached thousands of readers across the state. And, since coming on board at KXJZ, Carver has spent countless hours helping to produce "Capital Beat," CPR's bi-monthly member's magazine.
Carver is a passionate collector of African art, as well as vintage movie posters. His own acting background includes an appearance in the Sacramento State/Son's and Ancestor's production of The Sty of the Blind Pig. In 1973, Carver traveled to Washington D.C. where he was awarded the American College Theatre Festival's Award Of Excellence at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
