As a teenager I moved (reluctantly) with my family from Boston to New Jersey. At that time I discovered what a New Jersey accent sounded like (and was not thrilled about adopting it!) I also discovered that I had a Boston accent which, at the seasoned age of 14, sounded a bit provincial to me. Soon after that I determined that I would speak with no identifiable accent, modeling myself after TV and radio news broadcasters.
It worked!
