My Voice Experience
I've been told, "You've got the pipes," by a potential employer. The problem is, I'm not using them the way I'd like to. In graduate school at the Columbia University School of Journalism , I learned the NPR-style of radio voicing while completing a half-hour radio documentary for my Masters Project. Soon after, I picked up my voicing energy while radio traffic reporting for MetroScan Traffic in New Orleans during the summer of 2001. Later, I applied that energy to voicing my television news packages and live on-air VO's as a reporter and fill-in anchor at the NBC affiliates in Wichita Falls, TX (KFDX, 2001-2003) and Little Rock, AR (KARK, 2003-2006). As a media relations specialist and research writer for the University of Kansas Office of University Relations, I recorded weekly "Research Minutes" for the local NPR affiliate and voiced over special projects for the department's broadcast division. My work there required a more toned-down version of my usual energetic local TV news voice.
