Voice Description
My voice can best be characterized as 'extremely flexible'.
I, and a lot of other people as well, find it hard to characterize 'my' voice as there's so many of them.
I can sound warm and deep, commanding, black/funky and soulful, dependable, vulnerable, cheerful, enthusiastic, whatever.
I know lots of people actually describe themselves as such,
but I guess there's something 'wrong' with me that actually enables me to sound the way I do. I have no explanation for it, except that I was raised in Africa and was around black people most of my childhood. I picked up English in a multitude of accents and apparently have very flexible vocal chords along with 'absolute hearing'. Some say I'm the only guy worthy of rapping 'Follow the Leader' by Rakim without slipping, sounding EXACTLY like the real guy.
Whenever I pick a role, I can stick to it for hours without stopping, adapting even a specific sense of humour, emotions, anything particular about the character I'm impersonating.
The depth of my voice is about twice my real age, 43;), and I recently stopped smoking to stop it from dropping another octave.
However I can easily change to, say, a 20 year-old.
One of my heroes is Eddy Murphy, at a Summerjob in 1984 in Maine I managed to learn an entire tape by heart and cracked everyone up doing my Eddy stuff at the campfire.
Even back then people urged me to go on Saturday Night Live, but I guess I didn't have the guts to actually send a tape.
Instead I went back to Holland and became the most-heard voice-over ever on National Radio and Television, stretching my career far beyond the usual shelf-life of 3 years (before people get fed up with a specific 'sound').
I've been doing this now for the last 18 years, and I guess it's about time to spread my wings and start building a career in English Voice-Overs.
