Before we get to this week’s home studio tip, I wanted to let you know that we’re presenting a special online workshop with our Home Studio Master, Dan Lenard, this Tuesday evening called, “Building a Home Studio on a Budget.” Dan will give you some tips and advice on microphones, acoustic treatment, recording software, and of course, you’ll get the chance to ask him some questions about your home studio. This workshop is just $49 for Voice123 members. Click here for all the details and to register!
This week, our Home Studio Master says, “let the sparks fly!” as he tackles the Mac vs. PC debate. Which is better for voice actors? In this video, Dan covers the pros and cons of each operating system for recording professional voice over work and tells you his choice.
Here at Voice123, we get tons of questions every day on how to build a home studio, choosing equipment, troubleshooting, etc. Luckily, we have a great friend that is THE home studio master! Dan Lenard offers home studio consultations, is an expert at troubleshooting your audio woes, and hosts East West AUDIO Body Shop Monday nights at 9pm EST, 6pm PST. Find out more about Dan’s services here.
I know, I know my web site sucks going to redo it lol. …BUT I have a Rode Mic and a Focusrite box going into the server, my voice doesn’t have as much loudness without over modulating, nor can I get the rich deep sound I had at the radio station. I’m using a Live 9 Ableton Computer Board…what elso can you suggest…I’m on a string bean budget at this point but want to fix my recorded voice to a better level of richness and eq….love your site by the way it’s so informative…Thanks
Paul,
You’re going directly into your “mic in” on your computer? Yikes. Thats why. You need to re-think your set-up. The Ableton board may be good, but your feeding it a total analog signal that has to be converted to digital while the board is doing other things as well. Not the proper way to record computer audio. You need an external pre-amp/digital interface. It gives you much more control and really keeps analog noise to a minimum. If you’d like some direct instruction on what you need, contact me directly at my website.
I guess I’m wondering why you need rich and deep? Are you going directly over the radio? No, you’re just producing your voice tracks. The idea of a home voice over studio is not to make you sound great. Its to make you sound like…. you. All that “warmth” you’re looking for is not what producers are looking for. This isn’t about what you like. Its about what people who are hiring like.
