My Voice Experience
After spending 35 years in small market radio, I have done just about everything. Most of those years were spent as morning show host and main copy writer and commercial producer. As a result, I've done all kinds of commercials as both narrator and as characters in multi-voice productions - often providing all the voices.
I have narrated the "Back Roads of the High Country" audio driving tour presented by the Boone Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Ashe County Chamber of Commerce. With my co-worker Tracy Brown, I won a North Carolina Association of Broadcasters' award for best commercial in the small market category, Elvis the auto mechanic at Idol's Tire Service. I spent 15 years as the public address announcer for home games for the Appalachian State University Mountaineer football and basketball teams, the most fun job I've ever had. I have voiced broadcast elements and commercials for the Appalachian Sports Network (thanks David Jackson!) as well as the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs Network (thanks Brian Estridge!) I've invited folks to "come up for some down time" at Grandfather Mountain, Linville NC, voiced numerous commercials for the Mast General Store, the Visitors Information Channel in both Gatlinburg TN and Boone NC. My voice has been heard on the Mountain Television Network (my face was seen on MTN as well, as I was morning show host for 5 years on that local, low-power TV station), Mountain TV Guide, and on the radio over the years on WECR-FM, WATA, WZJS-FM, WKBC-FM and others in northwestern North Carolina. After many years of trudging through the snow in the North Carolina mountains, I have recently relocated and semi-retired to Gainesville FL, and have plenty of time on my hands to devote to YOUR project.
My Training
I suppose I would be described as self-taught. I graduated high school in 1976, but did not finish college. I learned from the school of hard knocks, doing the job every day, day in and day out, becoming better and better over the years. Small market radio gives you a much greater opportunity to take risks and develop techniques and voices, and I took full advantage of those chances. In addition to radio work, I spent 5 years at WLNN-LP, better known as the Mountain Television Network, and learned how to shoot and edit video, on Final Cut Pro. As someone who spent a lot of years responsible for the computers that ran these stations' automation systems, and as computers became more involved in the actual recording process, replacing tape, I have learned the technology as the technology advanced. I am also a guitarist and bass player, and could even provide some simple original music to certain projects.
My Studio Equipment
I record on Adobe Audition, ver 1.5 running on a Dell Dimension 3000 Computer
I have a Superlux ECO-H6A microphone
Yamaha MG 10/2 mixer
Symetrix SX208 compressor/limiter
various digital effects/processor software
I have broadband internet connection and can email mp3 files, burn to cd/dvd for mailing out, or can deliver via ftp
Additional Skills
No matter what project I voice, you will always get multiple reads, giving you a variety of sounds to choose from, and I am always open to making changes to be sure you are satisfied with the product you receive. I have done this for many years, both in the broadcast industry and other projects, and the most important thing is that the client (you) are happy with what you are paying for. I also am not hesitant to take on lower budget projects, and will still give you a high quality product. The clients that I listed above continue to contact me for additional work, indicating that they are satisfied with my performances and feel that what I offer is valuable. I'd like the chance to prove that to you.
