My Voice Experience
As a child, I always had a lower register for a girl, similar to a baritone. For the most part I never liked it, nor did I know what I was going to do with it. Then theatre came knocking on my door. I think I really began to notice something when I began performing Shakespeare, my voice suited the language, and it had a mature quality to it that I wanted to explore. After graduating high school I decided to major in radio/tv at Stephen F. Austin State University. I took an announcing class as one of the requirements for my major, and we mainly did different styles such as psas, news, etc. I really grew to like it, and I thought it was something I could really grow and work on. I got a job at a radio station my junior year doing the 12a-5am shift weeknights. It was a top 40 station, but I discovered how to adjust my voice to fit the preteen audience. I was still exploring my voice, just as I am to this day. I have been working on different reads such as commercials, narratives, documentaries, news, radio and Shakespeare. All of my work has been done in school. I graduate in May of 2009, so I am just beginning. However, I really think voiceover is something I can pursue. I love that it incoporates acting into it, and with each read you are a different character whether it is a mother, sister, or a woman on the subway. There's always something new to find.
