My Voice Experience

- For audible.com, the audiobooks for THE COMPLEATE PIGGE by David Niall Wilson and Brett Alexander Savory, A GAME OF BLOOD by Julie Ann Dawson, and INTO THE BLACK by Sean Ellis

I've enjoyed working with my voice ever since I arranged an audio recording of the dialog from THE RETURN OF THE JEDI with my friends when I was nine. Since then, in addition to performing in over 100 plays, I've been in many radio plays and voiced a number of cartoony characters for a web-based educational company in Minneapolis. While in college I read textbooks onto tape for visually impaired students, with material ranging from fictional diaries to philosophy and psychology to automotive breaking mechanics and calculus (my undergraduate degree is in mathematics education).
Creatively, I enjoy playing straightforward, intelligent characters (grounded, naive, or snarky), and I love all things Shakespearean. I have performed in a dozen Shakespearean productions, and have directed 5, where I've found my agility with language translated well into helping others' comprehension. I equally enjoy playing over-top caricatures, especially given the chance to perform multiple characters in one show. I once did four plays in a row where I had to create six or more characters in each, and which I'm proud to say I accomplished without repeating a one (though I do have to admit two of them had their origins in a Scrooge I had developed years before). And speaking of Scrooge, I've created a live one-man CHRISTMAS CAROL, with over 20 characters, which I tour to middle schools. I particularly enjoy learning accents, and currently can do 15 well: Standard British, Affected Upper Class British, Cockney, Lancaster, Irish, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Hungarian, New York, American Southern (2), New England, New York Jewish.
I am helped not just by my acting experience and training (I have an MFA in acting), but by my experience and education with teaching, where successful verbal communication is arguably even more important than in the theatre (as theatre usually has a much larger visual component). I have taught students from college age down to six year olds, and though my education degree is primarily in mathematics, I also picked up teaching endorsements (minors) in Literature, History, the Constitution, and Grammar. The last helps me with complicated or subtle syntax (with my mathematical, decoding brain also lending a hand). I've also enjoyed my share of creative writing, especially enjoying writing dialog or narration in distinct character voices, dialects, or speech patterns, as early as in elementary school. (I particularly loved reading them in front of the class . . . )
My lively and energetic voice matches my working style, which I look forward to sharing with you. Let the collaboration begin!

Textbooks onto tape: Ecology, Education, Baseball Strategy, and the diary of an 18th century Japanese housewife, Philosophy, Psychology, Automotive Breaking Mechanics, Calculus, Queueing Theory

EduWeb (Minneapolis): multiple character voices for DEADWOOD ILLUSTRATED, PEST WORLD FOR KIDS and AMAZING REEF for Chicago's Shedd Aquarium.

Radio plays: THE LEGEND OF SLEEPY HOLLOW (Ichabod Crane), THE LION IN WINTER, LOVE LETTERS, and ABRA-CADAVER. I also made numerous appearances in skits for the radio program OVER THE BACK FENCE in Minnesota.
