My Voice Experience
Right after graduating from college, WINS-AM Radio in NYC was starting an experimental program called WINS Newsphone. I auditioned and got the job, along with about 5 other clueless young people who, like me, had been on the radio in college. During each shift, I wrote and recorded a 30-second segment of news, sports, weather, traffic and the Dow Jones numbers, which was then posted to a phone-in system which callers could access. I got to give the news, and end each update with "This has been Andrew Barovick for WINS Newsphone." I was in heaven. Then it was cancelled after about 6 months.
Afterwards, one of my engineer friends back on the Columbia campus (NYC) was involved in the development of very early voice-prompt software. I recorded a ton of prompts about restaurants and movies for him and his friends.
Otherwise, I have always been an inspired practical joker, and most of the jokes have been performed over the phone. At times, I would impersonate people I knew, through work or family. At other times, I would simply disguise my voice, so that the recipient of the joke would not recognize who was calling. These tended toward the crude and shocking. I was always very convincing and effective.
My Training
Aria McKenna-New York Voice- Over Success Program; On-air talent in high school and college radio; speech training in college drama classes and at NYC's Neighborhood Playhouse theatre program;
B.A. in English Literature from Columbia College of Columbia University; as a lawyer, I speak in public on a regular basis: to juries; to law students to whom I teach trial advocacy; to other lawyers when I am giving Continuing Legal Education (CLE) classes.
My Studio Equipment
I have access to several studios, both near my home in Larchmont, NY, and my office in New York, NY. I recorded my demo CD at The Engine Room, on lower Broadway, in NYC, and plan to return for future projects.
I have a home studio, equipped with a Snowball USB mike that I use with Garage Band.
Additional Skills
I am very knowledgeable about pop music.
I write well and often, and have a legal blog (or "blawg") that is updated a few times per month, at least.
I am a father of a 10-year-old girl, and a 13-year-old boy, and a cat owner.
I am a car enthusiast, and one of the few people who insist on driving standard-shift vehicles. I drive an '06 BMW 330xi standard shift, 6-speed sedan, and it is the happiest time of my day.
I am a bike enthusiast when my back allows for it--road and mountain.
I have a big appreciation for, and some knowledge of food and wine.
I've worked in the production of TV commercials, movies and broadcast and cable TV. My last job in the entertainment business was just before law school, when I served as an Associate Producer of The Book Channel, produced by Cablevision in Woodbury, NY.
