My Voice Experience
In the years between 1960 and 1964, I attended what California schools termed speech therapy due to a "lazy tongue". Coupled with my mother's profession as an English teacher, I matured being careful to enunciate as correctly as I had received instruction. In later years, due to my speech pattern and complexion no doubt, I have constantly been asked my country of birth. Some have incorrectly assumed I was a native of the Virgin Isles, the Bahamas or some other similar area. Hearing I grew up primarily in Tennessee, California and Florida they have remarked in my lack of a Southern accent or any accent as all. Though chided for my "proper speech" throughout school by my peers, when productions were done my name was often nominated for various parts. In 1973 I was asked to take part in a 15 second commercial for Junior Achievement in which I was involved as a student locally. Recently, I finished a voice over for Heart to Heart Christian Academy and have that session available. Individuals have contacted me for personal projects such as creating voice mail messages or reading announcements, bulletins and such on occasion.
My Training
Throughout my early education I have participated in choir, play productions, chorus, journalism and other related fields but have had no true vocal training. There are many things about this craft which I would be interested in learning which of course would help to perfect and expand my range. At home or church I still dabble in self recording as time permits.
My Studio Equipment
In my home I have made music and voice recordings using an old Tapco 100M Stereo Powered Mixer,Shure SM 58 microphone and from time to time some older Electrovoice as well as a few AKG 1000E mics. To capture the sound I utilize my Harmon Kardon DC520 dual cassette deck and most recently acquired a cd recorder which I am anticipating soon using.
As part of the church A/V team, I have access to and on one occasion used the Tascam CD recorder, Behringer analog mixing board, and the wireless Shures. We are learning how to use what we have but all is very rudimentary at present.
Additional Skills
I am a non-smoker, non-drinker, and exercise fairly often to maintain lung capacity. Proofreading is almost an innate trait for me and I have been called upon several times as well as made my own requests to proof a publication before it is presented to the public. Several years ago I found personal satisfaction when I placed a call to the regional office of Saturn cars in reference to an ad running for the then new Ion. The voice over and print incorrectly used "your" instead of the appropriate "you're" which seems to be a common misuse in Florida. I cautioned the office that if the ad was locally produced and sanctioned they may wish to contact the responsible persons and have it yanked especially since the ad speaks of the QUALITY of Saturn cars this was a very visible example of the exact opposite. I received a phone call weeks later assuring me the ad had been yanked and thanking me for calling.
