My Voice Experience
I had thoughts of becoming a doctor and even worked in medical research for some time after studying towards a degree in the life sciences. But after being conscripted into the military in 1980 and serving time in conflict zones I re-evaluate my dreams; I went back to university in 1983 to study drama and film. I paid my way through doing news and actuality broadcasts for the SABC (Radio RSA) into Europe, the Middle East and North America. The different time zones allowed me to work a full shift on the radio before showing up for lectures at 8am! I graduated in 1986 and have since built a career in South Africa as a voice-artist, actor, screenwriter, and journalist. I worked in the field as a radio journalist for talk Radio 702 during the fall of Apartheid and the first democratic elections in 1994. More recently I have been anchoring the morning drive show on 567 CapeTalk (Cape Town). I do imaging for e-TV and have been their station voice since they began broadcasting in 1997. I have voiced a range of material from documentaries, commercials and corporate productions to telephone-on-hold messages.
My Training
I attended drama school at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg where I did rigorous vocal training during the four years of my degree. Since graduating in 1986 I have acted in radio dramas, stage (from Shakespeare to musicals) - and spent some time singing with an a-capella group "Not the Midnight Mass". I completed a course in investigative journalism at Johannesburg's "Institute for the Advancement of Journalism" in 1993. I have been active in the South African Scriptwriters Association and have done numerous courses in screenwriting under their auspices. In 2004 I joined a film school in Cape Town (AFDA) where I taught actors and screenwriters and where I earned an honours degree in 2007. I am currently completing a masters degree at the University of Cape Town, researching emotional contagion and empathy from a nuerobiological perspective. (How and why we're wired to experience others' feelings - and the implications for communication and social cohesion in an increasingly technological world)
My Studio Equipment
My home studio is accoustically treated and I use an SE Reflexion Shield for further controlling room ambience. I use a Sony C-48 Condenser microphone through an Alesis MultiMix 8 audio interface onto a PC with a dual core Pentium processor at 2.70 GHz. My preferred recording software is Cool Edit Pro.
A higher-end studio to which I have ready access runs Digidesign ProTools on a Mac Dual Core G5 which allows seamless file transfers with any video editing software. The studio also contains Sony, Yamaha, Rode and Behringer equipment with full music and FX libraries.
